A Letter From A Reader

On Wednesday evenings I do trivia at the club with the same three women I have done it with for years. We are strong on history, hopeless on sport, and we take it all far too seriously, which is the whole point of trivia.

Last Wednesday we lost a point in the geography round, and I am told it was my fault. Lorraine was meant to be remembering a capital city. Instead she leaned across the table, mid-question, and said the thing I have been repeating all week.

Never mind Ulaanbaatar. Where on earth did you get that blouse?

Two more women asked before the end of the night, one from the winning table, which softened the defeat considerably. So here is the answer, written down once, with photographs.

The blouse folded on the hall table
Folded on the hall table. Even folded, the drape gives it away.

How It Happens

First, you should know what sort of woman is telling you this. I am a summer-dreader. Not the season itself, I love the season, but the wardrobe part of it. Every year around November I open the wardrobe and everything is either too clingy, too hot, too much effort, or too plain.

You know the routine. The fitted tops that stick to you by lunchtime. The structured blouses that feel like wearing a paper bag in thirty-two degrees. The shapeless linen things that breathe but make you look like you have given up entirely.

So between the clingy, the stiff, and the shapeless, I had settled on the same three or four things on rotation, permanently. I thought those were the only doors.

What I Had Wrong

There is a fourth door. Nobody had shown it to me until this blouse walked through it.

It is a long V-neck with a relaxed cut that falls past the hip, in a fabric so soft and light it barely registers on the skin. But it is not shapeless. The V-neckline gives it structure, the longline cut skims everything without clinging to anything, and the fabric has just enough weight to drape rather than flap.

A fitted top clings. A shapeless one hides. This one drapes, which turns out to be an entirely different thing. It took a blouse to teach me the difference.

Mine Is The Grey

It is from , a small boutique that has been quietly dressing women our age for years now.

The colours are what got past my defences. Soft and neutral, nothing loud, nothing busy, which means it slips into the wardrobe beside everything I already own without arguing with a single piece. The fabric does all the talking and the colour never raises its voice. That, I have decided, is the loophole for a woman who lives in plain.

The blouse the day it arrived
The day it arrived. I knew before I put it on.

The details are quietly right. A flattering V-neckline that opens just enough without opening too much, a relaxed longline body that falls past the hip so nothing rides up, and a fabric so soft and breathable that I forget I am wearing it by the time I have locked the front door. There is nothing to tuck in and nothing to adjust.

What Happened At Trivia

Sandra wearing the blouse at trivia
At trivia. This is the whole outfit.

I wore it on its own with light trousers and sandals, and that is the entire secret. The V-neck makes it look put together, the length means nothing rides up or needs tucking, and the fabric moves with you instead of sticking to you. Suddenly a woman who has worn the same three things to trivia every summer is stopping the geography round.

Since then it has done a lunch down at Burleigh, a morning tea with Lorraine, and another Wednesday trivia, where we won, so it is possibly also lucky.

Three Things I Have Learned Since

One. The V-neck is the whole trick. It gives a relaxed blouse just enough shape that you look dressed without feeling dressed. Throw it on with anything and it looks planned.

Two. Long beats tucked. A blouse that falls past the hip skims everything and reports on nothing. No tucking, no adjusting, no thinking about it after you leave the house.

Three. Breathable is not the same as shapeless. The right fabric drapes instead of clings, and that turns out to be the difference between looking like you have made an effort and looking like you have given up. This one does the first while feeling like the second.

About The Price

I want to be straightforward about this, because it was the thing that made me hesitate.

The blouse is at the moment. It was .

I have paid more for plain tops that said nothing at all. For the one piece in the wardrobe that gets asked about between trivia rounds, it is the hardest-working thing I own per compliment.

I did what I imagine you are doing now and went and read the reviews before I ordered. Just over twelve hundred of them, sitting at stars. One woman had written, “I have not felt this comfortable and this put-together at the same time in years. I own it in three colours now.” That was the one that decided it for me.

They do a whole collection of these blouses, and I have already been back to look with my sensible head on, which is how I know my sensible head has gone.

Where it lives between wears. The armchair is better dressed than I was all last summer.

What I Would Tell You If We Were Friends

If you and I were sitting on the back deck with a glass of something cold and you asked me, this is what I would say.

If you have spent every summer rotating the same three tops because nothing else works in the heat, stop. A long V-neck blouse in a light fabric is the whole trick, and this is the one that proved it to me.

Two practical things. The is on now with free shipping across Australia, and once the anniversary stock is gone, it is gone, so the popular colours and middle sizes disappear first. Sizes run S to 5XL.

A fitted top clings. A shapeless one hides. This one drapes. Wear the drape.
