A Letter From A Reader

Every summer it is the same. You open the wardrobe and stare at it like it has personally let you down. Everything is too hot, too clingy, too much effort for a day that is already thirty-two degrees by nine.

I had spent years cycling through the same three or four things, none of them quite right, all of them requiring decisions I did not want to make before coffee. And then last Saturday at a lunch down at Burleigh, three different women asked me about my outfit between the drinks table and dessert.

One of them said the thing I have been repeating all week.

That is a whole outfit and you only picked one thing.

Nobody plans to become the woman people ask about at lunch. All it took was a jumpsuit and a pair of sandals.

The jumpsuit folded and ready by the door
The whole outfit, ready by the door. One decision, and sandals.

How It Happens

Somewhere along the way, getting dressed for summer became harder than it should be. Too hot for layers, too warm for anything structured, and somehow you still end up standing there at twenty past eight wondering what on earth to put on.

Shorts feel too casual. A dress needs the right bra. Separates need matching. And the thing you reach for in the end is the same tired linen top you have worn three times this week.

It is a terrible arrangement, and like most terrible arrangements, nobody remembers agreeing to it.

What I Had Wrong

Here is the bit I got most wrong. I thought a jumpsuit was something you wore to the beach or pottering around the house.

But a jumpsuit is not loungewear. It is a whole outfit. Slip it on, add sandals, and you are dressed. No tucking, no matching, no wondering if the top goes with the bottom. The jumpsuit does all the deciding.

And because there is nothing tight and nothing clinging, it is the coolest thing in the room. The wide legs let the air through and the loose top skims everything and reports on nothing.

One decision. Dressed. Out the door.

Mine Is The Gray

It is from , a small boutique that has been quietly dressing women our age for years now.

Mine is the gray, a soft warm greige scattered with big ivory flowers and the odd tiny butterfly, printed so it looks for all the world like heirloom hand-stitching. I will be honest because I always am: it is a print, not embroidery, which is exactly why it washes easily and costs what it costs. From across the table, it reads like something your grandmother made, in the best way.

The gray jumpsuit the day it arrived
The day they arrived. The flowers read like stitching until you touch them.

The fit is the quiet triumph. Wide easy legs that move when you move, a loose bib top that skims everything and reports on nothing, and straps that adjust with a neat little slider so the whole thing sits exactly where you want it. There is nothing to squeeze into and nothing to hold in.

What Happened At Burleigh

Saturday at Burleigh. This is the entire outfit.

I wore it exactly as pictured, white t-shirt, sandals, nothing else, and the questions started at the drinks table. Where is it from, does it come in other prints, is that comfortable.

My friend Lorraine, who has opinions about everything including my hair, said I looked like one of those women who always looks effortless without trying, and she meant it as a compliment, and I took it as one.

Three Things I Have Learned Since

One. A white t-shirt is all it needs. White under greige and suddenly it is a summer outfit that looks planned. A cream linen top works too. The overalls do not care. They go with whatever you own.

Two. One decision beats three. No waistband, no tucking, no wondering if the top goes with the bottom. The whole outfit is chosen the moment you pick it off the hanger.

Three. Comfort does not take summers off. The wide legs let the air through, the loose top skims over everything, and I am exactly as comfortable at a lunch at Burleigh as I am on the porch at home.

About The Price

I want to be straightforward about this, because it was the thing that made me hesitate.

The gray is at the moment. It was .

It has already worked harder than anything else in my wardrobe this summer. Cost per wear, it is the best money my closet has seen in years, and summer is not over yet.

I did what I imagine you are doing now and went and read the reviews before I ordered. Just over twelve hundred of them, sitting at stars. One woman had written, “One piece and I am dressed for the whole day. I own three colours now.” That was the one that decided it for me.

They do a whole collection of these prints, and I have my eye on the blue stripe next.

What I Would Tell You If We Were Friends

If you and I were side by side at that table and you asked me, this is what I would say.

Stop overthinking summer mornings. A jumpsuit and sandals is the whole trick. And if you have never tried one, this is the summer to find out why the rest of us will not shut up about them.

Two practical things. The is on now with free shipping across Australia, and once the anniversary stock is gone, it is gone, so the popular prints and middle sizes disappear first. Sizes run S to 5XL.

The jumpsuit is not beach wear. It is a whole outfit. Pass it on.
